For all those Radiohead fans out there, the new album "Hail to the Thief" has been let loose on the information superhighway. Some speculate that this was a direct result of the band itself ripping and leaking the album to newsgroups. Either way, from what I've heard already, this album is sounds great. It's more upbeat, and song-like than Kid A or Amnesic.

In related news Copy Protected CDs are making their way to the mass market. The record companies are making no compromises about this new format, even thought these new cd's will not play in your computer or on some CD players. As a result these new discs will not be able to carry the official CD-AUDIO stamp of approval from Philips.

And also, what doesn’t make sense to me here is the fact that so much file sharing is done by people who want to get the album before the street date. I don't believe putting encryption on these discs will make any difference to people who download music. It may even increase piracy due to the fact that some people will not be able to play their discs in their own cd-players. The user will then simply download the ripped tracks from the internet and burn a disc that will play where they want it to. Of course, then the RIAA will claim that their encryption just isn't good enough and will spend more money investing in better encryption schemes and causing the price of cd's to go up more, which will lead more people to download music.... (BEGIN CYCLE AGAIN).

This is indeed a picture of me holding an actual "Zack Morris Style Cellular Telephone (black) with the optional blue sunglasses accessory pack." Be amazed. Be very amazed. I'm going to investigate getting the inside components of my Nokia 5165 put into this phone so that it can become my primary cellular device. You all wish you could be me, but you can't. You'll just have to be content carrying your phones in your pockets while I carry mine on a strap around my neck.

Also... that hat pictured to the right, is currently on its way to my house via the USPS. There are also tons of fun Kangol hats at the villagehatshop.com. Jeremy "The Baron" Kolonay replied, "Muad'Dib is a religious zealot. We will crush his followers."

NOTD: The event Armageddon wanted to be

News from my day… I’m sitting in the game room of the student center, toasting to the good life—free popcorn and Dr. Pepper. MTV’s on the big screen, and I’ve seen The Core trailer eight million times. Personally, I think it’s the best claim a movie has made in years. At the end of the spot, it tags, “The EVENT Armageddon wanted to be!” What event was that? I missed it. Why would anything aspire to be Armageddon? I liked the movie, because I didn’t take it seriously. It needed more comedy, but what event was it trying to be?

In the You Thought It Was Only In Red Alert 2 news…
This is K-Dog, the coalition forces' most surprising weapon against Iraq.

With a camera strapped to his fin, the bottle-nose dolphin is one of about 100 dolphins and sea lions helping to clear shipping lanes in the Gulf to ensure a safe passage for vessels, including those which will provide humanitarian relief.

Obviously the “K-Dog” in question is none other than…. NOTD webmaster Kenny Fyhr.

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/2059449/detail.html

A manager found the store unattended at about 5 a.m. March 11. Missing were 1,938 packs of cigarettes, $1,200 worth of prepaid telephone calling cards, 643 lottery tickets, 15 cell phones and $1,500 in cash.

"The whole caper is on videotape," said Detective Todd Renner. "His whole shift he spends drinking beer and gathering things to steal. It's unreal."

Insight on Iraq
posted by : kenny : on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 @ 00:54 CST

I've seen recently on TV and the Internet where hundreds of Iraqi troops are surrendering to coalition forces in southern Iraq. This is great--for us at least--but it can lead to problems. Apparently several of the "surrendering" troops have not been entirely intent on giving up without a fight.

Iraqi troops are apparently giving signs of surrender to coalition troops and then opening fire when approached. On top of this the Iraqi soldiers are dressing as civilians in attempts surprise our forces.

"Known as perfidy or treachery, such acts are strictly prohibited because they make it extraordinarily difficult for coalition forces to accept surrendering forces or protect civilians," said Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke.

I can't help but laugh at this. I mean we're fighting a war because of Saddam's refusal to follow the rules that have been set forth for him and his country then we act shocked when they commit "serious violations of the laws of war".

canadians boo US anthem, still wish they had something to write about in history books
posted by : scott : on Friday, March 21, 2003 @ 04:36 CST

MONTREAL (AP) -- Fans booed during the playing of the U.S. national anthem before the New York Islanders' 6-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

The sellout crowd of 21,273 at Bell Centre was asked to "show your support and respect for two great nations" before the singing of the American and Canadian national anthems.

But a significant portion of the crowd booed throughout "The Star-Spangled Banner" in an apparent display of their displeasure with the U.S.-led war against Iraq. More than 200,000 people turned out for an anti-war demonstration in Montreal last Saturday.

In a related note, Canadians have zero national history and still share a government embodiment / currency print with England, the colonial ruler who handed Canada it's independence in 1867 as a sign of pity for the sappy landmass. As recently as late February, Canada was looking for something to do to create a historic event of any type, such that it could be printed into textbooks and taught to Canadian students as part of an elementary level "History" course.

Canada is also looking to trade citizens with an established nation, such that the ailing country may receive an inventor to invent something while within Canadian borders; as another attempt to fulfil the aforementioned "historic" event. Current exchange rate on the market is 36 year old Jean-Paul Lefourte, 27 year old Marie D'Ebarte, and three random children with ages ranging between 4 and 14, for one (1) citizen of another country who has at least a 51% possibility for inventing something of any significance. Serious inquiries only.

Here with a newish CD update is smiley.

Linkin Park - Meteora (3 - 25 - 03)

Sophomore effort by this rock/rap/metal/whatever band. The CD features 13 new tracks, (really only 12, the 1st track is an "intro"). After my first exposure to the disc, I'd say it's at least a good of record as Hybrid Theory. Of course, some people reading this will immediately start preaching about how LP is a manufactured band and they suck and on and on and on. The music sounds good, that’s all there is to it. If this CD were made by some no name group it would be considered extremely great, but since Linkin Park is popular, some people write them off as horrible. This CD has enough steam to keep fans of the first album happy and to ward off anyone saying it was a fluke. Standout tracks: Don't Stay, Somewhere I Belong, From the Inside.

AFI - Sing the Sorrow

This CD really one of a few cds that is just enjoyable to listen all the way through (and through again). Seems like someone really put a lot of work into this album. I really didn't know about this group until this album, so they are seemingly coming out of nowhere, but upon further inspection you'll find that they have several albums under their collective belts. Standout tracks: Whole CD is a standout.

Blur - Think Tank (5 - 6 - 03)

Damon Albarn's last musical project was for the amazingly popular Gorillaz album, after working on that he returned to the studio to record Blur's seventh album. I believe a few of the songs on the album were influenced a bit by his break from the norm to work on said Gorillaz project. "On the Way to the Club" would just as quickly have shown up on a Blur album as a Gorillaz one. But Blur fans need not worry, there are some classic Blur-ish songs on here as well. Standout tracks: Out of Time, Good Song, Brothers and Sisters.

Relient K - Two Lefts Don't Make a Right, But Three Do

This group reminds me of early Blink 182, but better. Although I doubt they will get any airplay (aside from college radio) they have managed to put together a really decent album. With any luck, they'll catch on and get some attention, they disserve it. I highly suggest seeking out and buying the album. Standout tracks: Chapstick, Chapped Lips, and Things Like Chemistry; College Kids; In Love With the 80's (but the rest of the cd is really, really decent too)

Weekend Cinema Review.
posted by : kenny : on Sunday, March 16, 2003 @ 02:57 CST

So the weekend is about two-thirds of the way over, and so far I've seen two major motion pictures, and read one 440+ page novel that is in production currently, so it will be a film soon enough. I suppose I'll start with the Friday night feature.

Friday, March 14th, 7:30PM CST
Great Escape 12: Bowling Green, Kentucky

The Hunted. This movie had received mixed reviews, mostly negative, but several positive. Well we all know I don't care what other people have to say about movies...unless it's REALLY bad. So I, smiley, "the Jew", and a few other people decided to give it a go. Now then, Tommy Lee Jones plays his standard "catch the bad guy" role, while Benicio Del Toro plays the afore mentioned "bad guy". Benicio doesn't play your run of the mill bad guy however, he is an ex-military special ops guy (or something close to that) and the part of him trained to kill has taken over his mind. He kills now because it is all he knows to do. So who better to catch this killing machine than the man who taught him...the now old and wrinkled Jones. Jones tracks Toro through jungles of trees and concrete alike, all the while being backed up by some hot FBI chick. Amazingly brutal knife fights throughout, with the final one of course resulting in the standard "good guy wins" ending. Overall decent story line, with a little tweaking it could have been marketed as the third movie in Jones' US Marshall collection, but it keeps you entertained, and on the edge of your seat during the fighting. You'll learn some pretty impressive ways to kill a man also, so if for nothing else, see it for it's educational values.

Saturday, March 15th, 9:50PM CST
Regal Opry Mills 20 & IMAX: Nashville, Tennessee

Tears of the Sun. First of all, I feel it necessary to inform you that recently Craig Kilborn gave this movie poster a poor review on the Late Late Show--I did not, however, let that affect my decision to see this movie. Smiley and I headed down to Nashville to view this movie since it was showing on the IMAX screen. (Yeah for those of you who don't know, they put regular movies on the IMAX screen with a modified 35mm projector, and it's quite impressive) So, this movie as well has gotten at best mediocre reviews, but still we pressed on. Since early previews of this movie came out I've heard one of two things about it, "It's a rip of Black Hawk Down" or "It's a rip of We Were Soldiers". Well if people meant it was a war movie made in the past five years, I guess they were right. Obviously it has to contain similar details. Would you prefer a war movie in which there was no fighting, no soldiers with guns..? It's a movie about war, it HAS to contain the same elements that made those other movies war movies -- soldiers, guns, ... fighting -- that's what war movies are all about. So since we've established that this IS a war movie, about WAR, containing WAR-LIKE things, I'll move on. I thought this was a very good story, sure it's been done before--a by the book soldier gets a conscious and defies orders--but that shouldn't stop you from seeing it. The realism this film showed was very good. It showed the darker side of war, and the things men do to become heroes. I felt this was an excellent movie, and would suggest it to anyone.

Friday, March 15th, 12:50AM CST - Saturday, March 16th, 6:30AM CST
My Bedroom: Bowling Green, Kentucky

Timeline (revisited). As some of you know, my favorite author is Michael Crichton. His most recent book, PREY, came out this past November, but his last book before that was, TIMELINE. The movie is due out in early-mid April, but as of yet I haven't seen much press on it. That doesn’t' really surprise me as I doubt it will be a huge money-maker at the box office, it should, however do decent as Most people have even heard about the book will probably see it. This book is probably one of Crichton's best--which considering the caliber of his writing, is tough to call. I've read most of his books and all of them are amazing, and most of them have gone on to become major motion pictures--in fact only ONE out of his thirteen works of non-fiction has not. This man is a genius when it comes to putting ink on paper. Timeline deals with a complex view on the universe and time travel. I just read it for the second time, the first was in 1999 when it came out. It's an amazing book, and should make for a good movie--everyone knows the book is always better than the movie, but from some early reviews I've read, this one looks to be shaping up nicely. Read it, or wait till April (if it comes out then) to see the movie.

Ladies -- Girls might as well be non-existant at this current time.

Work -- Due to the economy, people in Louisville are being layed off left and right as budgets tighten.

Girl Scouts -- The cookies are in, and the verdict is: TAGALONGS!

Redhat -- The Redhat Network [RHN] has an uncanny ability of e-mailing you five times a day with minor ass updates that could easily be put into a package and e-mailed once a day, thus cutting strain on e-mail servers and low-end users.

Spam -- A bill, which of course Microsoft is pushing, would take away monetary penalties for spammers in the state of Washington. Of course, this is an ugly precedent.

Cars -- The Honda is still not fixed, as its hood as been jumped on a total of 4 times by Jimmy.

Many have tired, many have fallen.

You can survive, allow the Canty Twinkie to guide you to true salvation.

news...

Heard on Rush Limbaugh today that Iraqi soldiers along the southern and northern borders are already begining to surrender to US troops. Looks like this war will be over before it starts. I don't understand why so many people are worried about the cost, and length of this "potential" war. Really. We OWN the rest of the world. We ARE the super power. IT's like me vs. smiley, I get a mawfreakin 10 guage pump sawed off shotgun, and he gets a plastic spoon. COME ON. It's domination at it's finest. We go in, we tear shit up with our laser guided super weapons and it's over. Iraq is ours, and we get cheaper gas. Move on.

sports...

So I was in attendance earlier this evening when Western Kentucky University won the Sun Belt Tournament. It was quite a fun time. I really like Diddle Arena. It's small (compared to Freedom Hall or Rupp) but it's got character. Every one in the place is there for one reason. Students all over the place, no full sections being occupied by mega-rich business executives who are more interested in the "it" factor than the game itself. Great basketball, great fans.

movies...

The Hunted. Comes out soon, VERY soon. Here's a quote from a recent review

The knife fights in this movie are so brutal, hell, all combat in this film, of any type… it is so uncompromising that after the film, some folks were wondering out loud how some scenes of extreme violence got past the MPAA. The film is complicated on several levels and forces the audience to wonder about many items left unresolved on purpose. This film will make you flinch in your seat. Friedkin’s fight sequences in this film are so visceral and fast, clear and intense that you may find yourself going, “Oh FUCK, oooowww, SHIT SHIT OUCH, Oh Man Oh Man!” You might even have your fingers in front of your eyes and peering back at the screen through the cracks between. You have been warned. You’ve never seen knife fights like this… Don’t think WEST SIDE STORY, think about striping and cleaning a deer.

tv...

TV OWNZ....The Dead Zone is the greatest show ever made. End of story. END.

music...

Friggin Evanescence. VERY VERY good Compact Disc if I do say so myself, and I do. I have this, you should too. They're like Linkin Park with a female lead singer. Linkin Park, by the way, has a new CD due out shortly too, I'm hoping it will be as great as Hybrid Theory was, because I'm going to buy it, and I hate wasting money. So the pressure's on them to make it good. Better head back to the studio now boys if you're even the least bit worried.

He actually owes me nothing, but I'd like to see him back here just to make people mad. There's been several people I would have loved to have said "OK SOCKS ATTACK MODE" and then we fall in to a feeding frenzy on one person usually via AIM untill they shot themselfs or blocked us both. Some of those sorry bastards would actually try and argue with him, a man that should never be argued with.

I also have a phone log conversation of socks and I. It contains his girlfriend (at the time, i have no real way of knowing what current news is in socksworld) saying "MOGWAI", and a discussion on horses.

Excerpt from the article linked in previous post:

Grant, Senior Day is a special for all of Kentucky's fans and supporters. But this year Senoir Day will be even more emotional, as this would have been John Stewart's final season as a 'Cat. You might remember that Stewart had committed to play for Kentucky, but tragically collapsed and died while playing for his high school team. Tubby Smith said that he never met any player that wanted to play for a school as badly as Stewart wanted to play for Kentucky. The school will honor Stewart as part of this year's Senior Day festivities, and it would be great for all college basketball fans to know about this story.
--Jay Green, Lexington, Ky.

Thanks for the info, Jay. Kentucky will be honoring its seniors (and Stewart) on Wednesday night at Rupp Arena before its game against Vanderbilt. It's a classy move by a classy coach (Smith) who recently broke down at a press conference while speaking about Stewart. While we're on the topic, Senior Day is one of the great traditions in college basketball -- and yet another example of why the college game is superior to the pros.

Amazingly enough, the man responsible for bringing Tubby Smith to tears is a staff member at NOTD.net. We're on our way straight to the top.

Bin Laden Living Dead
posted by : smiley : on Thursday, March 6, 2003 @ 11:52 CST

CNN ran a story about captured al Qaeda chief Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. As you see by the picture he look a little roughed up and in need of a shave (Full body). During interrogations he claimed that Bin Laden was alive, and then later said that he was dead. We've seen this battle before. Bin Laden being both dead and alive will obviously force the government to use different tactics in the capture of the al Qaeda leader, and eventually defeating the remaining members of the terrorists group.

One point I'd like to touch on is the way CNN handled where Mohammed is being held and how they are treating him:
Mohammed, believed to have been a key planner of the September 11 terrorist attacks, was being interrogated with "all appropriate pressure" at an undisclosed location outside of the United States, and outside of Pakistan, where he was captured Saturday, U.S. officials have told CNN.

This obviously translates to: "being beaten at the top of every hour, hooked up to car batteries, and drug through glass".

Oh yeah, Kentucky and Arizona are the only real basketball teams.

Late monday night after a team practice, the Utah Jazz announced some shocking news.

Super-Star players Karl Malone and John Stockton have apparenlty mutated. That's right; mutation. Details are still sketchy at this point, but sources say their bodies have merged creating some sort of basketball playing monster. No pictures of the beast have surfaced yet, but it's sure to create a stir wednesday night when the Jazz take on the Seattle SuperSonics. Team officials expect the new player to be ready to go that night, and a new jersey has been made.

Equipment manager Arty Johnson had this to say, "Yeah, we had to make it something to wear. After the mutation it still had three arms, so neither old uniform was going to work."

Team officials also report that the new player will be known as "Kahn Mastockton" and will count as 1.5 players on the court. When asked how the team would deal with such an odd situation, spokesman Terry Lebowski commented, "We've made no firm plans yet on how to handle plaing with only 4.5 men on the court. The NBA won't let us play 5.5, so we're looking into other options." Lebowski refused to shed any light on what these possible "other options" may be, but insider reports say Jazz officials have made several calls to Spud Webb.

abc network in financial trouble, sells stuff found lying around in studio halls

(NOTD) - New York

The american broadcasting system, in a recent effort to curtail revenue losses, has begun selling "random crap we found lying around the place", says station president Steven M. Bornstein. "We're losing lots of money lately - apparently people don't enjoy watching 'I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here' as much as we expected, so our ad revenues are way down." Bornstein exhumed. "In order to raise money to make another Wayne Brady themed television show, we've decided to start actually picking up around the place, and selling what we find on [internet auction site] eBay."

Apparently ABC hasn't actually cleaned its studios, ever.

"We've got stuff lying around basically everywhere," quoted Bornstein. "The other day I came across a Cousin Larry plush toy, from the second season of 'Perfect Strangers'. The pull-string voice still works, but all the quotes are in Arabic. 'Perfect Strangers' was huge in Kuwanistanzia, you know."

ABC hopes the revenues will generate enough extra money to fund the yet-unnamed Brady project, as well as a possible future sitcom featuring Ted Danson.

eBay member 'DansonFan138025' commented on the ABC situation by adding, "ABC is a excellent seller! graet Danson tshirt! a real asset to ebay A++++++++"

I've set up forum for NOTD, and it's subdomains. It's meant to serve as a common place where everyone, can talk, hang out, read stupid crap, etc. I'd like for everyone to take a look, and post if you like. There are general topics, as well as individual forums for each of the notd subdomains. So go there, it won't bite.

A FYHRful event

Kenneth the Man Of All flew his car into a swimming pool today. Julia Sweeney (right) reacted with extreme predjudice. Meanwhile, One piece of debris flew into a local man's apartment window. In related events, riots broke out as protestors demanded Kenny receive a brand new 1989 Animul as consolation for the swimming pool being in his way. Reconstruction of the debris of Kenny's vehicle and the swimming pool began immediately at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, in order to try and solve the mystery of the rogue swimming pool. Partying continued into the late afternoon hours, as the elderly of Sanbourne's Bay Area-Adult Daycare Center in San Jose, Calif., celebrated the swimming pool's attack on Kenny.

NEW COLOR OF THE MONTH
posted by : smiley : on Saturday, March 1, 2003 @ 17:54 CST

I found a story on Cnn.com about how the Homeland Security Office is lowering the TERROR THREAT level to "Yellow". I guess this means we can all go back to living our lives how they were before our terror threat level got elevated to the ORANGE level. We can stop stockpiling duct-tape, and go back outdoors again. Seriously, does anyone REALLY care about what color our terror level is at? (Besides the frantic maniacs, of course).

Earlier when I was riding the shuttle bus around campus to get back to my car which was parked in Egypt, my phone up and decided to reset it's clock to 6:00AM. This wasn't due to the battery falling out or anything of that nature, I was in the middle of writing a text message. I know that this phone ( a nokia 3360) is plagued with problems ranging from SSL (sudden signal loss) to where the phone will turn on for about 10 seconds and turn right back off again. I've had this phone replaced at least four (4) times in the past. The combination of service from Cingular and the faultiness of Nokia has led me to make the decision of switching to another phone service when my contract expires in October. I've had enough of the nonsense spewing from Cingular and their "Customer Service". See, they owe me $300 from a "security deposit" I made when I got this damned phone in October of 2001. But instead of sending me my money back in November of 2002 like I was promised, they delayed me getting anything until January of 2003 (for what reason I will never know). Here it is near March and I haven't seen a penny of MY OWN FRIGGIN MONEY. I've never made a late payment, and there is no reason whatsoever that cingular has to keep my money. I've made endless phone calls about this, and every one is the same. "Ok, it's all cleared up Mr. Coleman, we're processing the check and it should be sent out in four to six weeks". I also don't understand why it takes FOUR TO SIX WEEKS to send a check, of my own money, back to me. I don't get four to six weeks to pay cingular every month, I'm expected to pay promptly, which I have, every month, since November of 2001. Cingular is the worst telecommunications company to ever enter the business. Need more proof? Ok, how about Coverage Complaints or a wide variety of complaints. (Take note that the search que used ALL feedback, not just complaints, go ahead, look for compliments).
